"When the pearls of nature were sown, handfuls of them were cast on this soil" Lord Byron - 1820
Montenegro is one of the world's newest countries, only having gained independence in 2006. This Adriatic gem has a coastline of just 175 miles, but the miles of pristine shores, washed by the warm, crystal-clear sea and sweeping from the Venetian port of Kotor to the border with mysterious Albania. Between the two are multiple beaches, forest-cloaked mountains and mirror-like lakes and centuries-old towns with influences ranging from Venetian to Ottoman that have left their mark on this tiny country.
Though not presently part of the European Union, there is a distinctly European feel about Montenegro's towns and resorts; to start with the official currency being the Euro.
For many years Croatia Tours has been offering Montenegro as an alternative destination, flying into its neighbour Croatia, but now with direct flights from Dublin starting in 2020 this gem has just become more accessible and definitely worth a visit before the masses arrive.
